Dental Hygiene/Gum Treatment

At Bundoora Dental Clinic we care about preventing any problems before they begin. Caring for your teeth and gums every day means that you are also taking care of your dental hygiene and preventing decay and gum disease. However, this is only possible if you are taking care of your dental health correctly. There are several ways that you can do this:

Brushing teeth every day

You should brush your teeth thoroughly after every meal each day using fluoride toothpaste. It is recommended you brush in the morning after breakfast and in the evening after dinner.

Flossing teeth every day

Make sure to remove any food and plaque from between your teeth and be careful not to damage your gums.

Disclosing tablets

If you would like to check that you are brushing and flossing correctly, you may use disclosing tablets that we can provide you with or you can purchase from your local chemist. By chewing on these tablets, it will reveal the areas that you have missed cleaning.

Drinking water

If you drink plenty of water that contains fluoride you will be improving your gums, teeth and dental hygiene by keeping your mouth and body hydrated. If you have a dry mouth this can lead to bad breath and increased decay.

Gum treatment is only required if recommended by your dentist and usually involves several appointments depending on the extent of treatment required.

Symptoms of gum disease

To determine if you have any symptoms of gum disease, you need to be aware of the following:

• bleeding of the gums when brushing

• red and inflamed gums

• sensitive teeth when chewing

• sore or sensitive gums

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is recommended you make an appointment with one of our friendly dentists to determine the treatment you may require.
